The weather was stunning. Mid to high 70s and perfectly sunny.
Base camp was set up on the banks of Pine Lake, with the threshold made of a downed bough, some sticks and rocks, and some goosefeathers. While the walkers were out, I found a baby raccoon, struggling through the underbrush, and I watched children catch minnows on the shores of the sparkling lake. As they passed by, the children and the dogs jumped right over the threshold. The adults, every one, walked around it.
Everyone returned with an amazing story. From them, I learned not to hand anyone a burden in life, no matter how well-meaning. I learned to look for the wild path, the one that ends up breaking rules. And I learned the secrets of a huge, downed tree.
